This month we got the 3rd issue of Duck Avenger, or #2 as the cover say (the first issue was #0).

After getting to know the time travelling villain Red Raider in last issue, the Evronians are now back again!

And if you read issue #0 you might remember the short intro taking place on another planet, ending with the silhouette of an unknown person. We get the continuation of this backstory in #2, and get to know who this person is.

The story in issue #2 is mostly just introducing Xadhoom. After a bit of a bumpy start, the Duck Avenger and Xadhoom soon find out they have a common interest.

Having read ahead in this series, I know this is not the last we have seen of her – and the story about her people is far from over. There are some really great storylines with Xadhoom to look forward to, so this month's story is just the start.

Duck Avenger #0 hit the comic shelves last week. I know some fans have been waiting a long time for this, but are there enough old fans to keep the series going? That was my first thought when I heard the news... I guess the majority of American readers picking up this comic don’t know much about what they’ll get – but I hope enough people get this bargain of a comic anyways and get hooked, making the series last. Because for $4.99 you’ll get a lot of comics for your money in this premiere issue!

The new series from IDW starts collecting the Italian PK series, or more specifically the PKNA (Paperinik New Adventures) series. As the American title is simply Duck Avenger we could possible see the continuation PK² and the stories under the unofficial title Paperinik New Era (Gli argini del tempo and Il raggio nero) being collected in the same title too. But that is too far in the future to hope for yet.

We also got a related series PK Pikappa, but unlike the ones mentioned above that one is a reboot with its own continuity. PK Pikappa already is partly published digitally in English as Superduck, and works better under another title I think.

Even if the title name is just Duck Avenger, the series is actually referred to as "Duck Avenger New Adventures" in the bullet points in the August Previews catalog.

Judging from the cover and description for the next issue, it’s going to collect the original "Zero/2" issue while calling it #1. I don’t think what numbering IDW choose to do matters that much; the important thing is that the series seems to follow the original chronology. (Side note: The text in the image above say Lila Lee, but the final name used in #0 is Lyla Lee.)

So, what should people expect from the new Duck Avenger series? First, a lot of action! Both the storytelling, art and page layout will differ from what we are used to in a regular Duck story. It might look a bit strange at first, but you’ll get used to it fast.

We’ll see Uncle Scrooge once in a while and Huey, Dewey and Louie in a couple of the first stories – but they seem to be busy with Junior Woodchuck camps. For the most part Donald/Duck Avenger has new allies and is fighting new villains in this series, and you won't see any of the "classic" characters. The stories are partly crime-fighting superhero stories – but with gadgets (like Batman) and not superpowers. But the series is also a sci-fi saga. Most of the stories are from 60-70 pages long, but we also have shorter side-stories I hope will be included by IDW.

The first issue was translated by Jonathan Gray, and from what I’ve understood he will continue doing the rest too. And if you follow his twitter, he seems to be really excited about being able to do this – being a huge fan of the series. In fact I don’t think we would have seen this series in English at all if not for him! For more information read this interesting interview at Diskingdom.
 

IDW often order new coloring for European stories in their Disney comics. But the coloring in Duck Avenger #0 is the original Italian coloring from 1996, with some minor adjustments like Scrooge’s spats. Even if the coloring is 20 years old and from the early days of digital coloring, I don’t think it appears dated at all.
 

Currently a new issue is scheduled for release every second month (alternating with Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories). If IDW keep that schedule it will take eight and a half year to publish all 52 PKNA issues. That’s a long time, but I hope sales will allow that to happen! I’ve read most stories before, but I look forward to reading them again in English.

The origin of the Duck Avenger

The true origin story

IDW just published the two-part story The Diabolical Duck Avenger in Donald Duck #5 and #6 (legacy 372 and 373).

This story, originally published in 1969 in Italy, tells the story about how Donald Duck finds Fantomallard’s diary and becomes the Duck Avenger. I’m a bit surprised it took 46 years to get this story published in the USA, in Europe the story is quite famous! The San-Diego comic-con magazine "Disney Comics – 75 Years of Innovation" (2005) even have a page telling that this story is an important milestone in the history of Disney comics.

For me this story is a bit nostalgic. The origin story is also the first story with the Duck Avenger I ever read. My local library had this story in one of the oversized books similar to the American Abbeville books. And I remember I loved the story as a kid and borrowed the book numerous times. So I really enjoyed re-reading the story with American dialogue!

I’m not going to do a review of the story itself, I’m sure some other bloggers will do that. But did you notice the cover made a point out of this being the true origin of the Duck Avenger?

The Disney Adventures origin story

Because the story is actually not the first origin story printed in English. The first one was The Secret Origin of the Duck Avenger in the May 2000 issue of Disney Adventures, and with a follow up part in the next issue .

In this origin story the "mad scientist Ludwig von Drake" has been captured by evil alien ducks from the planet Zondar, and needs Donald’s help. In Ludwig’s laboratory Donald find a super-suit and the Duck Avenger is born!

The logo used in this story is the same as IDW now use for the Duck Avenger, and I can’t remember seeing it anywhere else. So that’s probably the source for IDW’s logo.

The PK origin story

"The Secret Origin of…" story in Disney Adventures looks like it is inspired by the Italian PK series of the Duck Avenger, that got a huge fan base in Italy (and the rest of Europe) in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. But the PK origin story didn’t come out until two years after "The Secret Origin of…" , and wasn’t translated to English until 2012. You can find it on comiXology in the first issue of Superduck titled Superhero of the Day

But in this translation as Superduck.

This story is actually a reboot of the PK series. Like every proper superhero series, of course we have a reboot… A similar story introduced the original PK series, but in that story Donald already is the Duck Avenger when he discovers Uno in the tower and starts fighting aliens. So it’s more true to the Duck Avenger canon. I don’t think the original PK introduction is translated to English.

The video game origin story

So we have 3 different origin stories for the Duck Avenger, that should be enough right? Well, there’s actually a 4th in the video game PK: Out of the Shadows! And the PAL version of the game (both the GameCube and PlayStation 2 versions) comes with a comic insert telling this story.

The story is called Evron Attacks and is pretty much just a short and slightly rewritten version of the "Superhero of the Day" story.

In this story the Duck Avenger is called PK.

The flashback origin story

Gemstone only published two stories with the Duck Avenger. The first one, Crisis (Donald Duck Adventures #14), is not that interesting. It’s just a typical Italian Duck Avenger story with nothing special in it.

But the next one was the closet we had to a (translated) true origin story before IDW finally printed it. The story Legacy (Donald Duck Adventures #18) has a lot of references to “The Diabolical Duck Avenger”, and tells the origin story through flashback scenes.

In this translation the predecessor is called Phantom Duck, and not Fantomallard like in the recent IDW translation of the origin story.

"Legacy" is (kind-of) a sequel and extension to both "The Diabolical Duck Avenger" and the story "Paperinik alla riscossa" which gives more details about the Duck Avenger’s predecessor. I really hope that story is going to be translated and published by IDW too! And to get more insight into the backstory, they should also translate "Paperinik e il tesoro di Dolly Paprika".

Ultraheroes

During the BOOM! run of Disney comics we saw another version of the Duck Avenger. Eega Beeva assembles all Duckburg superheroes to form the group Ultraheroes.

Of course, the Duck Avenger is part of that group, but he used another suit when appearing as part of the Ultraheroes.

A new suit

The Ultraheroes story started in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #699, but from part 5 on it continued in its own title. The entire story was later collected in 3 trade paperbacks.
